When You Lose Someone Close
This image is a photomicrograph of a single particle of gunpowder, produced with an electron microscope, then enlarged x500. Electron microscopes are used to investigate the architecture of cells and a range of biological and inorganic specimens that is only visible at high magnifications (higher than a conventional microscope). Employing a sort of pseudo-science strategy I was interested in what kind of information about violence I might gather from such an examination. The unexpected crumbling plant-like shape reminded me of a quote by Israeli acclaimed author and activist, David Grossman when speaking at the Joint Israel-Palastinen memorial ceremony “When you lose someone close, you lose an entire private culture”. Switching between on and off, the entire planet is lit up or darkened down.
